Two-week campaign limit allows for strong dialogue
Last week, upon reading the piece "UPUA Election Code Limits Healthy Debate," I couldn't help but to disagree with the Collegian's stance on this issue. The Collegian claims "it is utterly ridiculous to censor potential candidates for up until only two weeks before the election," but in reality there exists a multitude of legitimate reasons behind the UPUA's decision. The two-week limit set forth in the UPUA election code not only allows candidates to appeal to their audiences in a closed timeframe. The Collegian claims that "two weeks is far too short a time for healthy dialogue and debate to go on in the pages of a newspaper or in any other medium," and while this might stand true at a national level, the fact is that the students at University Park are a captive audience surrounded by numerous daily publications. Qualified candidates should be able to use all these resources available to them to demonstrate their ability in reaching and mobilizing a mass audience for their cause quickly and efficiently. After all, aren't those the qualities we're asking from our leaders in the first place? Jordan Shelton
