Men's rugby duels with intrastate rival IUP tonight

Collegian Staff Writer

A little more than a week after going toe-to-toe with rugby powerhouse Trinity College, the Penn State men's rugby team returns to action tomorrow night looking to implement what it learned from playing the Irish squad.

They'll be doing so against yet another up-and-coming Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union (MARFU) team in Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

"They're always a solid opponent," Penn State head coach Don Ferrell said. "They've come up here and given us fits before."

Unfortunately for IUP, they have the honor of being the first team to face a Penn State team that is flying high after its recent performance.

After struggling for most of the first half against Trinity, something clicked during the second half for the Ruggers -- a sign that Farrell's squad may finally be reaching the level he's hoped for over the past few years.

"Since [Trinity] came here last time, a lot of things in our game is patterned off of them. I learned a lot from those coaches and from those players," Farrell said. "We can talk about it until we're blue in the face, and they can do it, but they don't really do it like [Trinity] does it. And now they've seen it. I've noticed in training and different things, they realize what I'm talking about."

After struggling to stretch the field in previous matches, the Ruggers are showing signs of an improved offensive attack, one that resembles more of a foreign spread out style. When compared with the tight, congested style of attack that is usually seen here in the U.S., the new offensive strategy could pose problems for an IUP defense that figures to be constantly under pressure tomorrow night.

Now, after a week that witnessed Trinity both practice and play here, Penn State has an improving offensive attack and has seemingly turned on another gear in practice this week, and has done so with a newfound intensity.

"We've been working on the holes that the match showed us," Farrell said. "We're ready to get out there after playing at that pace.

"Imagine how slow the game is gonna look when you're playing even the likes of IUP maybe, and those teams that are coming up. Now it should be a lot easier to see things coming in front of you, now that you've seen it coming in front of you at that kind of pace."
