Column fails to make case against new bill
In "Congress strikes a blow for civil liberties" on Oct. 3, Jen Winberry states "The collection of attorneys' fees is necessary to keep the church and the state separate." However, there is no such law. It's just a paraphrase of the First Amendment, and a poor one at that because it is less precise. The Public Expression of Religion Act, as she described it, does not conflict with "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" because there is nothing that favors one religion, or no religion, over another. All viewpoints should be free, as much as is practical, to express themselves publicly. Jen apparently feels there must be no expression of religion on public property. A stronger case can be made against that position for violating "Congress shall make no law prohibiting the free exercise" of religion than the case she attempts to make. Bryan Jensen
