New under-21 dance club to offer alternate social scene
Club Frost, to open this semester, is expected to be a safe, alcohol-free party scene open until 6 a.m., three nights a week.

Underage undergraduates who are tired of the same humdrum apartment party or dingy frat may have a new place to 'pop, pop... pop that thang.'

An under-21 venue, Frost Nightclub and Lounge, will be opening at 459 E. Calder Way, located behind University Towers, sometime this semester.

Although the opening date of the new club is still undecided, Mak McKeehan, co-owner of Frost, said.

Frost will showcase a main dance area, in addition to two themed lounges and a special effects light show.

McKeehan said Frost will be different from other local nightspots, because "we will be extremely clean, secure and we will pay extreme attention to detail."

The club will feature a dance team, which is scheduled to perform choreographed, on-stage routines two to three times per evening, McKeehan said, adding that "it will be nothing risqué."

The team will perform on a separate stage and dance to a variety of music.

"Big clubs in cities like Pittsburgh and Philly always have dancers -- it enhances the atmosphere," said Megan Marie Jones (junior-journalism), captain of the Frost Nightclub Dance Team.

The nightclub will concentrate on hip-hop, R&B and top 40 hits.

It will highlight DJ's as well as local bands on one of the largest stages in State College, McKeehan said.

Shows will be all-ages events, while normal admission to the club will require that guests be at least 18 years old.

McKeehan said that the State College area was in need of an under-21 hangout.

"I'm only 20 -- every summer I'll go to Players on Tuesday nights, and during the school year that's not convenient," Jones said.

Although alcohol will not be an option at the club, Frost will be serving energy drinks, as well as finger foods such as pizza, hot dogs and chicken fingers.

Club Frost will be open at 9 p.m. every Thursday, Friday and Saturday and the party will continue on until 6 a.m.

"We want to provide a safe enjoyable place for people to go after the bars close," Tom Donahue, Frost assistant general manager, said.

McKeehan and Donahue both stressed that Frost's main focus will be to provide a safe and secure environment.

"We want to make sure employees and patrons are safe -- we are going to extraordinary lengths to make it happen," Donahue said.

Plans for security are still in the works, but Frost has hired an extensive security staff and plans to incorporate internal surveillance precautions and perhaps a walk-through metal detector.

"We need to set a precedent -- it is time for State College and Penn State to understand that society can be dangerous," Donahue said. "Hopefully, other bars and establishments will set the precedent with us."
