The weather's getting colder by the day, and it's usually about this time of year that the geese start seeking warmer temperatures for their winter homes.
That is also the case for Two if By Sea and The Capitol Years, two of the bands who will play tonight's Roustabout! at The Darkhorse Tavern, 128 E. College Ave. Unlike the geese flying south, however, the two bands playing tonight are about to embark west on their own national tours.
"We've toured the East Coast and Midwest a lot, but this is the first time we're making it to the West Coast," David Hardy, of Two if By Sea, said.
Besides the cross-country tour, the two bands will also showcase their new releases. Two if By Sea's new album, Safety, came out Tuesday and The Capitol Years released a new album, Dance Away the Terror, just last month.
Hardy said the band is more comfortable with the style of its new album, which is a departure from the band's "dance-punk" sound on its first release.
"It's pretty different," Hardy said. "We kind of got lumped into this dance-punk category that we were never totally a part of. We got compared to all these bands we don't really like, like The Killers and some really bad bands, like Panic! At the Disco, that I think we sound nothing like."
Since that album, Hardy said the band has had some lineup changes that contributed to the sound of the new album.
"This album is more organic," he said. "We're a four-piece now. We had a keyboard player, but he quit the band in January. We wrote this record, and it's more of a rock record. We replaced the function that the keyboard had with more organic instruments."
Hardy said those "organic instruments" include cellos and other string instruments.
But despite the subdued replacements on the new album, Roustabout! organizer Jeff Van Fossan said the band is better known for its raucous live atmosphere.
"They have a very intense live show," Van Fossan said. "Their stuff's really fast and dance-y, but not retarded dance-y. They have really strong, melodic bass lines and disco beats."
Roustabout! promoter Jesse Ruegg said Two if By Sea has built up a following in State College because of its frequent touring.
"They have built up a fan base here because they've played here a number of times," Ruegg said. "When they come here, people come out to see them."
Van Fossan said the band has been one of the standards of the weekly concert series.
"They've been playing here since the very beginning," Van Fossan said. "Since I've been doing shows, they've always been doing shows. They were one of the first regional bands who came here and started doing shows. And they kept coming here, so they draw pretty well here."
The show will start at 10 p.m. and tickets for the 21 and older show are $5 at the door.
