The attorney for former Penn State football player LaVon Chisley is alleging Langston Carraway, the student whose June 2006 murder remains a mystery, was a "known dealer" of drugs in Centre County.
Chisley has been wanted for questioning in the June 5 murder of Carraway, who was found dead in his 110 Northbrook Lane apartment by a family member. His death was ruled a homicide June 6 by Centre County Coroner Scott Sayers, who said Carraway, 26, died of "massive blood loss as a result of a stabbing."
Chisley faces misdemeanor drug charges after a scale and a small amount of marijuana was found in the apartment of his ex-girlfriend, who said the scale belonged to Chisley, according to court documents.
Chisley claims the scale belonged to Carraway, Karen Muir, Chisley's attorney, said.
Carraway's family was unable to be reached for comment.
Misdemeanor drug charges were filed against Chisley on June 22 for possession of drug paraphernalia -- namely the scale.
Muir filed a motion Thursday asking a judge to release the search warrants that led to the drug charges Chisley faces in Centre County. She said the search warrants contain information about the scale that would help Chisley's defense.
"It helps his case if it's not LaVon's," Muir said.
Centre County District Attorney Michael Madeira disagreed.
He said it doesn't matter if Chisley was not the owner of the scale because he was in possession of it.
Madeira added that none of the warrants were related to Chisley's drug case, but instead are related
to the homicide investigation. He said Chisley's girlfriend handed over the items and no warrant was needed.
Madeira also said he will fight the release of the search warrants because they would compromise the murder investigation.
Muir announced in July that she believed her client would be charged with Carraway's murder.
Still, no charges have been filed in the homicide case, and Madeira insists that an arrest is not brewing against Chisley.
"We are doing as thorough an investigation as we can do," Madeira said. "I am not going to jump the gun simply to make an arrest."
Muir said police sources have indicated to her that Chisley will be charged with the June 5 murder and her decision to publicize that knowledge is strategic on the part of the defense.
"It is a little odd, I agree," she said. She would not say exactly why she made her expectations public when Madeira has repeatedly said he has no plans to charge Chisley.
Madeira has said that he wanted to interview Chisley on his knowledge of the incident since Chisley was living with Carraway's brother until the day before the murder and declined to come to Centre County for Carraway's funeral.
Madeira will not comment on whether Chisley would talk.
