The Lions tear up the Wildcats

Collegian Staff Writer

After having a game to forget last week at Ohio State, Penn State quarterback Anthony Morelli and receiver Deon Butler will likely remember this week's 33-7 win over Northwestern. And if they don't, their success will still be remembered in the Penn State record books.

Morelli had his best game to date as a starter, while Butler set the Nittany Lion single-game receiving yardage record, racking up 216 yards on 11 catches.

Penn State's offense had plenty of success in the early going, but repeatedly failed to reach the end zone. Sophomore kicker Kevin Kelly was on the mark, though, scoring the game's first nine points on kicks of 34, 22 and 33 yards.

After sticking with short throws a week ago at Ohio State, Morelli aired it out a bit against the Wildcats. In the first quarter, the junior quarterback connected with Butler on gains of 40 and 55 yards. In the second quarter the combination hooked up for a 49 yard gain on which Butler came up injured.

The Lions were, however, able to convert on Butler's third deep catch with a Tony Hunt touchdown from one yard out.

Morelli finished with a career-high 288 yards while completing 19 of 31 attempts.

As in weeks past, turnovers again plagued the Lions in the opening half. Tony Hunt's first quarter fumble halted a drive in the redzone, and a head-scratcher of a throw by Morelli landed square in Northwestern linebacker Nick Roach's hands.

Roach's interception gave Northwestern ideal starting field position at the Lions 16, which the Wildcats parlayed into a touchdown with 7:31 to go in the half.

Northwestern's offense was unable to move the ball against the Lions defense all game, amassing a total of only 135 yards in the first three quarters before the backups came in.

Penn State took a 16-7 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The second half opened much like the one before it, with Kelly kicking a field goal when the offense stalled deep in Northwestern territory.

Pinned back on his own 1-yard line late in the third quarter, Wildcat punter Slade Larscheid barely escaped the Penn State rush, getting off a punt that netted only 28 yards. With the ball on the Northwestern 29, the Lions methodically marched into the end zone as Hunt recorded his second touchdown of the day. Kelly's extra point pushed the Penn State lead to 19.

From there, it was all laughs for the Lions, who quickly regained possession when Northwestern quarterback Andrew Brewer was picked off by linebacker Sean Lee, who managed to make an impressive leaping catch while still keeping a foot inbounds.

Penn State wasted little time converting on the opportunity, as Tony Hunt's six yard run toward the Lions sideline resulted in the senior's third touchdown of the day.
