PSU heads to Greenville

Collegian Staff Writer

This weekend, when the Penn State women's tennis team heads to the Furman Classic in Greenville, S.C., one word will be on its mind: success.

Success for the players and success for the coaches. For the Nittany Lions, success couldn't come at a better time.

The Lions, coming off of an impressive showing at the Cissie Leary Invitational and the Maryland Invitational, look to continue their ways, as the Furman Classic will play host to eight schools including Tennessee, Vanderbilt, UNC, Wisconsin, South Carolina and Clemson.

Penn State coach Buffy Baker made sure that her team focused on the task at hand, and continued practices as usual.

"Mainly we are focusing on the same drills that we did before the last tournament," she said. "We are working on doubles play, and setting up some singles matches, while always trying to improve on our serves."

The team will send eight players to the tournament. Seniors Sasha Abraham, Katelyn BeVard and Andreea Niculescu will lead the team, along with junior Jenny Shular, sophomores Dorothy Dohanics and Lauren Holzberg, and freshmen Sarah Lotto and Lauren McCarthy. The first action for Penn State players will kick off this morning at 9.

McCarthy, who captured her first singles title in her collegiate career at the Maryland Invitational last weekend, looks to build off of that success, as well as inspire the team into playing better.

"Coming off of last weekend, most people did a lot of the right things," Baker said. "I think they are going into the weekend knowing that the level of competition is higher, and I think that they are glad for what came out of last weekend."

That level of competition includes matching the performance of singles play in last weekend's tournaments, where the Lions claimed multiple matches. The team will start play today and will finish up on Sunday.

The Furman Classic sets up to be an important tournament for the Lions, one where the level of determination of the players is only matched by the level of success.
