Ryan Simmons is right, it seems that the administration is playing a larger and larger role in previously student-run activities. There has been so much said recently about UPAC, the Student Programming Board, and UPUA, but the university has other means of attempting to control and shut out students that many of them might be unaware of. At the very end of last spring semester, the Friday during the last week of classes, the administration decided they had had enough of students and completely locked down Old Main. They kicked out all students and wouldn't let any in.
Graham Spanier supposedly has an open door policy, but apparently that only holds true for one student at a time, and only on the days they decide to leave the doors to Old Main unlocked.
But no one knew about this, save a few students.
Who's holding the university accountable? It's our building, it's our university, it's public space! In a sense, Old Main represents Penn State. It is the oldest building on campus. It is the building on the postcards, in the history books. It is the building that houses the most important administrative offices. I do not pay an excess of $20,000 to watch the doors of our university's landmark be slammed shut in my face. And I find it appalling that instead of taking the time to listen to student's concerns, their solution is to simply lock them out. It wasn't the first time the administration has shut out students, and if the student body continues on in apathy, it won't be the last.
