Fraternity adopts female adviser

Collegian Staff Writer

Though the inevitable "walk of shame" that follows a foggy sleepover on Fraternity Row may plague some girls, waking up at a frat house is just a normal morning for Rachel Rollo.

Rollo, a college student affairs major, who currently lives at Sigma Phi Epsilon's fraternity house, 524 Locust Lane, and is serving her first semester as the chapter's "resident scholar."

Rollo said she feels her resident scholar role is an effective way of gaining hands-on experience toward her masters in education.

"I serve as a mentor," Rollo added. "And I help the guys with personal situations and school decisions."

Daniel Hadas, president of Sigma Phi Epsilon, said Rollo is actually the fraternity's second female resident scholar. He also said that the chapter and National Sigma Phi Epsilon drove the movement for a live-in adviser, not the university.

"Nationals believes that it's a way to foster development for the brothers," he said.

Rollo said the chapter has also decided to adopt the "balanced man" program as suggested by National Sigma Phi Epsilon, which aims to "return to the values and principles on which Sigma Phi Epsilon was founded."

Rollo said that besides paying for her tuition, providing her with her own bedroom at the fraternity house and granting her a $500 monthly stipend, National Sigma Phi Epsilon trained her in assisting the brothers with the "balanced man" initiative.

Kevin Kerr, director of fraternity and sorority life at Penn State, said having a female live-in fraternity adviser is typical in other states.

"Around the country, it's not uncommon for a fraternity to have a female live-in adviser," he said.

Hadas said having a live-in female adviser has many advantages.

"She's available 24 hours a day. She supervises, supports and provides feedback. I can ask her anything I want," he said. "She's a female, so it's nice that she gives that perspective, too."
