When incoming freshmen first set foot on campus, the university helps them out with all their questions. Freshmen need to know where buildings are, which classes to take and when to declare a major.
After all that of course, students become concerned with other topics of importance that the university doesn't cover, like excuses for tardiness, what makes a good AIM profile and what to hide during a party.
The writers of collegehumor.com have produced a book that covers all these topics and many others that are of interest to students everywhere. The book is appropriately named The CollegeHumor Guide to College: Selling Kidneys For Beer Money, Sleeping With Your Professors, Majoring In Communications, and Other Really Good Ideas.
I first saw this book last summer. I was standing in line at Barnes and Noble when the cover picture of a guy passed out in his boxers immediately caught my attention. I picked it up, started flipping through it and then decided I had to have it as a coffee table book for my apartment.
The Guide to College covers 19 chapters of university-related advice and insight. The chapters progress semi-chronologically, from finishing up high school all the way to life after graduation. In between are pages on food, greek life, dating, academics and anything else you can think of pertaining to these particular four (or more) years of your life.
To help illustrate what this book is like, I turned to chapter ten, "Academics". One of the pages lists phrases commonly used by students who pull all-nighters to finish a paper or some other important assignment.
A few of the phrases the writers of the book came up with include: "I'm debating whether or not to go to sleep now and wake up really early tomorrow," "I'm gonna work for a few hours, head over to Jim's party, then come back and finish it up right before dawn" and "I'm gonna take a quick power-nap and recharge the batteries." These plus the other 12 phrases listed on the page are so true. I heard these exact words or similar variations of them countless times. That's a major part of what makes me like this book so much -- it's funny because I can relate to a lot of the stuff in it.
So next time you're wondering about the fundamental truths of food delivery or how to get the most out of $10, you should pick up this book. The CollegeHumor Guide to College is an amusing look into what we all experience while enjoying our last few years of freedom and it's a great addition to anyone's library.
