Country band hits local scene

Collegian Staff Writer

Next time students want to procrastinate on Sunday nights, they can grab their partners, put on their cowboy boots and head to the Brewery, 233 E. Beaver Ave., for a night of good old country fun.

The downtown bar is now featuring a new band, Poker Face, every other Sunday night. Poker Face plays classic country, covering songs from Johnny Cash to Lynyrd Skynyrd, as well as modern country.

Where: The Brewery, 233 E. Beaver Ave.

"We've been practicing since May, and our first show was in August at the Tussey Mountain Wing Challenge," electric guitar player Brian Kirsten said. "About five years ago, I noticed people requesting and liking country music. I wanted to put together a country band before someone else did, but it wasn't until six months ago that we finally put together our band."

Another member, Todd Kirsten, said Poker Face plays pretty much what one would hear on the modern country radio stations, such as Tim McGraw, Jason Aldean, Toby Keith, Kenny Chesney and Keith Urban, as well as some of the classics. The band also gets ideas from Country Music Television (CMT) to know what new songs to play.

"We do upbeat country songs, so people don't have to worry about slow ballad songs," Kirsten said.

The group consists of five members. Kirsten plays acoustic guitar, with George Powell on the drums, John Matthews on bass guitar and Chad Caprio and Brian Kriley on electric guitar. All five sing vocals, although Kirsten does most of the singing for the country songs.

The band members said they met through the bar scene. Kriley is also a current member of the band Velveeta, a popular '80s cover band, and Matthews was a former member. Caprio was a former member of Foxxy.

Poker Face's first show at The Brewery was Labor Day weekend. The Brewery's Manager and Co-owner Ray Rockey said he could tell interest for the band has been growing.

"The first show drew a big crowd -- there were probably 250 people there. It was a mix of locals and students. Normally on Sundays there are 30 to 40 people," Rockey said. "If it keeps going well, then next semester maybe we'll have them every Sunday. This is the first band we've had on a Sunday. There aren't many things to do on Sundays, so we were just trying to give people something to do."

Poker Face's next show will be Oct. 1.
