Anyone who has seen the Austin Powers movies knows that when retro England meets modern America, hilarity inevitably ensues.
Though this week's Roustabout! might not provide hilarity, it will provide another transatlantic clash when Brooklyn band The Picture comes to town.
While the band only features one English-born member, guitarist Chris Buckle, the band lists early Britpop bands Blur and The Stone Roses, as well as other English alternative rock band The Cure and The Jesus and Mary Chain, as some of its influences.
Vocalist Robert Abel said the English influence comes from the band members' early days.
"That's mostly me and the guitarist," Abel said.
"I grew up really loving that stuff, and he grew up in it. I don't think it's overtly obvious, but it's definitely there."
The band is in the middle of tracking for its upcoming album, which Abel said will be finished by the end of the year.
While Abel said the band's first full-length effort, Connect, "had a lot of high-energy stuff," he said the new album is more cohesive and "a more versatile collection of songs."
"It was all written at the same time, while the last one was written over a period of time," Abel said. "It just kind of happened by accident; it wasn't really a plan. We wrote some stuff, a couple songs at a time, and over the course of a couple days, I wrote five or six songs."
Abel said the new songs had "a little bit more of an intimate, chill thing than the last records," but that the band would have an even split between high-energy and the lower-key songs in its live show.
"We mix it up, in terms of our set," he said.
While wrapping up work with the album, Abel said the band was eager to get out on the road for some live shows.
"We're still getting all this stuff finalized with this record," he said. "In the meantime, it's good to just get out and play."
