Positive communication may come from Survivor

After hearing about the new season of Survivor and its premise, I too was a little shocked that a major broadcasting network would base a show on a very hot issue. However, we can look at such a bold move in two ways.

First, such theatrics may open lines of communication between racial groups and we could end up having proactive conversations about race-related issues. As much as we would like to think racism is solving itself, there are many issues plaguing our society -- consciously and subconsciously.

By putting stereotypes into mainstream media, there may actually be a positive outcome despite the negative undertones. We may finally begin to notice how ignorant we are to the importance of race relations.

However, if CBS promotes the typical stereotypes of these races, there could be a negative backlash. Such stereotypes may be strengthened, causing a decline in the move toward a tolerant society.

Depending on the way in which it is promoted and how we react to it, the new season of Survivor could be the push our society needs. Or, it may damage the already unstable race relations within our society. What we do with this is up to us.
