Fair kicks off homecoming

As Jack Johnson's Curious George soundtrack hummed in the background, a smiling Winnie the Pooh greeted children at the Hintz Family Alumni Center.

Yesterday afternoon from 2 to 6 p.m. about 10 organizations kicked off homecoming season by setting up booths at the second annual Family Fun Fair. The activities at the booths included Twister, hula hoops and Halloween mask-making.

Todd Pontius (senior-life science), homecoming community service chairman, organized the event. He said he was pleased with the organizations that chose to run stations.

"The kids seem to be having fun," he said. "The various organizations here have made some really original and creative programs."

At the Penn State equestrian team's booth, children were invited to win prizes by playing "pin the tail on the horse."

Rodrick Stewart (junior-biobehavioral health) helped run the Student National Medical Association's jump roping stand. He said he felt good about participating in the fair.

"This is what we should be doing," he said. "It's important to give back to the community."

Omega Phi Alpha and Pi Lamda Phi followed the fair's motto of healthy living by making a "veggie art" stand.

Dorothy Beatty (junior-English) said she was excited to help children make pictures with vegetables and paint.

"I was like 'Yay! I get to play with kids,' " she said.

The Health Policy and Administration Club organized a food art stand. They helped children to form healthy foods into sailboats, turtle and butterfly shapes.

Roberta Murray (junior-health policy and administration) said she felt this was an appropriate activity for her club.

"It's important to help kids make healthy food choices," she said.

Mark Poblete (senior-Information science and technology), homecoming overall chairman, said he was hoping for a larger turnout of families.

"We sent out announcements to all schools in the State College school district," he said. "It's something new; hopefully by next year more people will get involved."
