The offense finally popped its head out of whatever hole it was hiding in on Sunday, but playing a road game against the defending national champs quickly sent it back into hibernation.
The Penn State men's soccer team got shut out 2-0 in College Park, Md., last night by the sixth ranked Maryland Terrapins, putting only two shots on goal in a game that saw its share of yellow cards.
The Nittany Lions (2-6-1, 1-0 Big Ten), whose goal was to get ahead early, gave up the first scores quickly, going down a goal less than four minutes into the game. Terrapin forward Graham Zusi ripped a ball from 20 yards into the left side of the net past last week's Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, goalkeeper Conrad Taylor.
A flurry of fouls followed the goal, including the game's first card, which was handed out to Lion David Gray. Gray would later be ejected after his second yellow card in the 88th minute.
Maryland would score again with five minutes left in the first half. Jason Herrick cut inside from the left and buried the ball in the right side of the net, bumping the Terp's lead to two scores before Penn State had managed another shot on goal.
The Lion's might have had their best chance of the night before halftime when defenseman Stephen Rheiner's shot was deflected wide by a Terp.
Brady Renfrow headed the ensuing corner kick on net, only to be stoned by Terp keeper Chris Seitz.
Seitz, however, saw almost no more action for the rest of the evening, as Penn State registered only a single shot on goal in the second half.
Maryland forced Taylor to make three saves and took a total of six shots, seeing two blocked by defenders.
Entering the game with the most confidence they have had all year, the Lions' frustrations seemed to mount in the second half, when three more yellow cards were dished out to boys in blue.
Jeff Chambers received his warning midway through the half, and both Alex Wentzel and Gray were carded with less than five minutes left on the clock. Gray's second yellow resulted in a red card and an ejection.
The loss leaves Penn State winless in five games against ranked teams this year, with only one goal scored in those games.
The loss comes three days after Penn State had scored its season high of three goals in the Big Ten opener against Michigan State.
Sophomore forward Jason Yeisley, who injured his knee running into an opponent Sunday, sat out and all signs point to an extended absence from the lineup.
