Penn State administrators proved yesterday that their shamelessness apparently has no limits in moving to censure the College Republicans for using "amplified sound equipment" during the group's Sept. 11 memorial service last Monday.
I don't agree with everything the College Republicans choose to do, but what Penn State student or, indeed, American, can fault them for remembering so tactfully the greatest tragedy to befall our homeland and countrymen in modern history?
That the Penn State administration is moving to punish the College Republicans for using amplified sound during their memorial speaks to its lack of character. Free speech seems to exist at Penn State, just so long as it is approved beforehand.
Republicans requested an exception to the rule for their special memorial service and were denied by officials (tastelessly), but decided (rightly) to use amplified sound anyway.
The result: the College Republicans being disciplined by Penn State for honoring the victims of Sept. 11.
What Penn State is doing is tactless at the least. Students and alumni should speak with their pocketbooks to those running President Spanier's so-called "student centered university."
