USG looks for new legal service

Collegian Staff Writer

The Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Senate considered multiple proposed replacements for the free legal consultation services that Jose Texidor once provided at last night's meeting.

Texidor, a crime, law and justice lecturer provided free legal consultation to students until his contract was not renewed this fall.

Last week, Senate approved a resolution demanding that Texidor's services be reinstated or replaced.

Pat Daley, USG vice president, suggested the contact information for a private law firm could be placed on a "Know Your Rights" card that would be distributed to students.

Brock Coleman, USG Senate president, said he had been in contact with Hyatt Legal Plans, a part of Metlife.

The company would provide both legal consultation and representation, he said.

"With Texidor, if you had a problem with the university, you were out of luck," he said. "This is a provide company that is not affiliated with Penn State."

Coleman said that the service could possibly be paid for by charging every Penn State student three dollars per year in a manner similar to the student activity fee.

However, he said students who do not wish to the use the services will be able to "opt out."

Coleman said he would try to schedule a presentation by the company at a future senate meeting and would invite administrators.

Senate also approved two new senators. Alan Slipak was approved as a town senator and Nicole Bossert was approved as an East Halls senator.

Some Senate members raised concern about the new senators' lack of familiarity with USG.

Coleman said the only positions currently available in senate are two openings in East Halls. However, two or three town senators who have not recently attended Senate meetings may resign.
