Katrina program stimulates thought

Collegian Staff Writer

As the now infamous video featuring Kanye West and Mike Myers came on screen, a diverse group of students in Thomas building burst into laughter as West declared that "George Bush doesn't care about black people."

This video marked one of the lighter moments of "United We Stand, Divided We Are," a program about Hurricane Katrina put on last night by members of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity as part of "Alpha Week."

Alex Thomas, previous president of the chapter, said he was pleasantly surprised with the turnout of about 100 students.

"It was a great mixture of both caucasian individuals and black individuals," he said.

Jonathan Walker (senior-economics) showed an original PowerPoint presentation that he created about Hurricane Katrina and how the disaster was handled by the government.

"I don't want to bash Bush," he said. "Everything he did do, I did say, and everything he didn't do, I did say."

Walker described where the president was and what he was doing during the time of the disaster in New Orleans, such as promoting a Medicare plan with senior citizens and playing his guitar with country singer Mark Willis as the hurricane struck.

Some audience members criticized Bush's lack of action, though some said that he wouldn't have been able to do anything even if he had responded quickly.

Randi Congleton, assistant director for sorority and fraternity life, said the program was a success.

She praised the audience's "diversity of thought."

"It definitely added to the conversation," she said.

After the presentation, Thomas asked the audience to stand up and donate money.

More than $160 was collected last night.

Bethany Thompson (freshman-elementary education) said she attended the program as part of an out-of-class requirement for her Sociology 119 class, but found it informative.

"If I had money, it'd be great," she said, explaining her reaction to the call for donations.
