Many people hate waiting in lines, especially to get in their daily workout.
With the anticipated opening of the renovated Rec Hall, many students imagined the heavy usage of the White Building would have decreased, but instead many students are finding themselves still waiting in the same long lines they stood in last year.
The 16,000-sq. ft. fitness facility addition to Rec Hall opened Sept. 1, offering students cardio and strength training equipment, fitness classes and upgraded varsity wrestling facilities.
The new Rec Hall facility requires a Student Fitness Membership pass, which includes access to the White Building and all fitness classes.
While there seems to be no lines at Rec Hall, the White Building seems to have doubled in wait time since last year, said Amir Salih, student supervisor at the White Building.
Salih said he thinks the reason for the increase is due to the increase of freshmen and the fact that the White Building is closer for students living in dorms.
"When people complain about the wait, I suggest they go over to Rec Hall, but they say 'that's all the way on the west side of campus," he said.
He also added that staff at Rec Hall recently decided to open the facility on Saturdays at 4 p.m. to alleviate some of the tension on the White Building and to encourage students to start using the new facility.
"At the White Building, every single machine is taken, but at Rec Hall there are more machines and less people," Chris Cancino (senior-mechanical engineering) said.
Cancino said he has been going to the White Building for years, but now lifts weights at Rec Hall.
"At Rec Hall you can just walk right in," he said.
Neha Nadkarni (junior-international politics) said she'd rather avoid the gym than wait.
"If there's a line, I just don't go," she said.
Nadkarni said she prefers to work out at Rec Hall because she hasn't had to wait in line yet, and she likes that each cardio machine has a television and headphone set, something the White Building doesn't offer.
"It seems like most of the people who go to Rec Hall are upperclassmen, juniors or seniors," she said.
There are some students who live in the dorms but prefer walking to Rec Hall rather than waiting in a line.
"I live in the dorms, practically next to the White Building, but I walk all the way to Rec Hall because it's a better facility," Suzanna Schamber (sophomore-nutrition) said.
"It's like a 45 minute wait. Why wait 45 minutes when you only get to use the treadmill for 20?" she said.
