Letter to the Editor
Stereotypes problematic for more than minorities

I am writing in response to Andrea Arango's column in Monday's paper, which asserted that stereotypes facing white Americans were really no big deal. In her column, she cites only the stereotype that white people can't dance, while she neglects to mention, but does not neglect to adhere to, another more pressing stereotype that white Americans face: That white people are inherently racist.

Many times when a white person gives any sort of criticism to a person of a different race, it's first assumed that the criticism was made because of the person's race. The white person is always thought of as the racist in these situations, regardless of any legitimacy of the criticism. This is a double standard that hampers white people. If a white student had written a column saying that stereotypes faced by blacks or Latinos were really no big deal, there would be a mob at the Collegian calling for his head.
