I just wanted to write concerning the article "Tales of Notre Dame or bust," Sept. 12, that said Notre Dame fans shouldn't expect a warm welcome when they come here next year. Man, I hope that isn't true.
We have the reputation of being one of the classiest programs in the country. Why do you think our players are always in shirts and ties? Why do you think our players don't dance around after we make a tackle?
Because JoePa makes darn sure that things are done the right way. Unfortunately, he doesn't have that kind of control over the fans.
It's up to us to hold ourselves to that standard and to uphold that reputation as a classy program.
Collegian columnist Kate Ericsson put it best last year in her column "Success encourages maturation of student fans" after the Ohio State game. She wrote, "We've proven we're the best in the Big Ten on the field, and the loudest in the Big Ten in the stands. Let's take it to the next level and prove that we are the classiest group of crazy screaming white-clad fans in all of college football."
"We are the 12th man," she wrote. "Let's hold ourselves to the same high standards to which JoePa holds the players."
I couldn't agree with her more. In fact, I think the Collegian should re-run that article before every big game to remind us all what it means to be a part of this classy university.
