Music heals at Band Aid

Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity set out to prove the greek scene is more than just a stereotype by organizing "Band Aid," a benefit concert held Saturday.

Local bands Mark This Day, Cloverleaf and Arctic Summer belted out heartfelt "cuddle songs" to a rolling crowd of about 200 while the brothers of Alpha Sigma Phi eagerly collected $5 cover fees and solicited raffle tickets.

The brothers estimated that, through cover charges, 50-50s and raffle tickets, they raised about $2,000 for their charities.

The three-band show was a service effort to benefit the local Second Mile, as well as Alpha Sigma Phi's national charity, Canine Companions for Independence.

Eric Musser (sophomore-marketing) was one of the event's coordinators. He said he and his brothers decided to hold the concert because they felt a strong desire to change the public's stereotypical viewpoint of Greek life and give back to the community.

"Frats have been getting a bad rap with Penn State being ranked the No. 2 party school in the nation," he said. "That's not what they were founded on."

The event ended early, at about 11 p.m. because of noise regulations, and only about half of the expected attendees showed up.

Despite these factors, one brother, Paul Cowen (junior-professional golf management) said he felt the charity event was a success.

"The whole house did a great job of coming together," he said.

Ryan Very, lead singer of Mark This Day, played at "Band Aid" for free. He said he and his band support benefit shows.

"We play a lot of shows for charity," he said. "We're totally down with that."

Cloverleaf and Arctic Summer also donated their time and music on Saturday.

New Era, the official cap sponsors of Major League Baseball, acted as a corporate sponsor for the event, donating several hats to be used as raffle prizes.

Local sponsors included The Goppers, 114 Hetzel St., The Family Clothesline, 352 E. College Ave., and Are U Hungry, 222 W. Beaver Ave., all of which donated raffle prizes and food for the bands.

In addition, one brother donated a football signed by Joe Paterno to be raffled off.
