Lions freeze the Penguins
Penn State rebounds from last week's loss with a 37-3 win over Youngstown State.

Consider it a much needed tune-up.

A week after Penn State suffered its worst loss since 2003, an embarrassing 41-17 loss to Notre Dame, senior running back Tony Hunt rushed for 151 yards and a score on just 18 carries, and the No. 25 Nittany Lions rebounded with a 37-3 win against Division I-AA Youngstown State.

Today's game was the last opportunity for Penn State to iron out any early season kinks before it takes on No. 1 Ohio State next week in Columbus.

But while the scoreboard showed some improvement from last week, the Lions still have some areas of concern.

On offense, junior quarterback Anthony Morelli completed just 11 of his 27 passes, throwing for 154 yards. And on the special teams side, Kevin Kelly connected with a career-long 49-yard field goal to break a 0-0 tie with 9:51 left in the second quarter but also missed on three of his six attempts.

Oddly enough, it was a freshman that sparked the Penn State offense.

With 7:04 remaining in the second quarter, freshman A.J. Wallace took a reverse from Hunt and streaked 76 yards down the sideline for a touchdown to give Penn State a 10-0 lead.

On the Penguins' next possession, sophomore Anthony Scirrotto picked off a Tom Zetts' pass. Three plays later, an 11-yard Hunt touchdown scamper put the Lions up 17-0.

Rotating between Zetts and Mike Schneider at quarterback, Youngstown State never got into any offensive rhythm. The Penn State defense held the Penguins to just 10 first downs and 184 total yards and their only scoring came on a third quarter Brian Palmer field goal.

Defensive tackle Ed Johnson had two sacks and linebacker Paul Posluszny had a team-high eight tackles to lead the Penn State defense.

Reserve tailback Rodney Kinlaw had 86 yards rushing and Derrick Williams added 59 yards on the ground for Penn State, which racked up 568 yards of total offense.

By the time reserve quarterback Daryll Clark gave Penn State a 37-3 lead with an 18-yard touchdown run with 1:37 left in the game, much of the 104, 954 fans in attendance began leaving the stadium.
