Banners were simultaneously hung across campus at 12:30 p.m. today to discourage Penn State from using sweatshops to produce its apparel.
Yellow banners with sayings such as "Make PSU Clothes Sweatshop Free" were dropped out of windows at Willard and Sackett Buildings. Some students passing by also reported seeing a banner at the HUB, but that it was taken down soon after it was put up.
Olivia Guevara, co-founder of the Student Labor Action Project (SLAP), said she received an e-mail from an anonymous Hotmail account advising anti-sweatshop activism groups to be at those three locations at 12:30 p.m. to hand out flyers.
According to the e-mail, the action coincided with a "national day of action in support of sweat-free purchasing policies," as students across the United States and Canada were encouraged to hold demonstrations in support of the Designated Suppliers Program (DSP).
Zach Scheid, co-founder of SLAP, said adoption of the DSP would ensure that all factories where Penn State apparel is produced would follow a code of conduct, give employees a living wage and have independent worker-based associations such as unions.
