State: doctor loses license

Collegian Staff Writer

A doctor's medical license was revoked in June after the Pennsylvania Department of State found he had performed thousands of illegal abortions -- including some in a State College facility.

Dr. Harvey Brookman's medical license was invalidated June 29 after he was found to be practicing gynecology and obstetrics without official PA Board of Medicine certification. He performed 2,400 illegal abortions from June 2001 to Oct. 2004 throughout the state, according to court documents filed by the PA Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs.

Brookman worked as a part-time doctor at a variety of facilities owned by licensed abortion provider American Women's Services, including the State College Medical Services, 900 W. College Ave, according to court documents. The documents indicate that in the past, he also worked in Pittsburgh, Erie and outside of Philadelphia.

State College Medical Services refused to comment on Brookman's employment or how

many abortions he had performed there. Brookman's listed phone number was disconnected as of press time yesterday and he could not be reached for comment.

Brookman's medical history was investigated after the Centre County Citizens Concerned for Human Life, an anti-abortion group, expressed concern about his medical practice in March 2004, said Susan Rogacs, spokeswoman for Citizens Concerned for Human Life.

In 1994, the State Board of Medicine publicly reprimanded Brookman and fined him a $2,500 penalty for a reason not listed in court documents.

After he paid the fine, the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine temporarily suspended Brookman's license in January 1995 after investigating a petition from the Commonwealth, according to court documents. In May 1996, the State Board of Medicine lifted the active suspension of his license and placed him on probation for two years.

According to court documents, in February 2002, Brookman performed an abortion on a 17-year-old girl in the King of Prussia area, and he allegedly took on the role of an anesthesiologist for the procedure but neglected to monitor the girl's vital signs. The documents also said Brookman did not perform the surgery correctly, causing the girl to be rushed to another hospital for surgery.
