Pollock Laptop Library moves to Pattee for all-nighters

Collegian Staff Writer

The Pollock Laptop Library, the all-night study area on the first floor of Pollock Library, has been moved to the first and second floors of the Pattee Library.

In the future, the Pollock Laptop Library will be converted into an electronic testing facility.

A gift from the Class of 1994, the extended study area in Pattee will offer the same features as the Pollock location with extended services, according to a Penn State press release.

"We have always had night hours, but it's never been a 24-hour service," said Catherine Grigor, manager of public relations and marketing for university libraries. "The area evolved from what students wanted and what is available. The librarians are constantly looking for ways to make information available to students."

The services formerly offered at the Pollock Laptop Library -- the use of university laptops, free wireless Internet, free coffee, access to a computer lab -- will continue in Pattee, along with other amenities.

"In addition, the basement level will have a disabilities service unit for students who need help to read or hear," associate dean of university libraries Sally Kalin said. "This is a long-term project. We will be looking to see what students want."

Use of the materials in the news and microforms library, televisions, three group study rooms and a study area for adult learners will also be available. Some students are thankful for what they consider to be the most important resource available.

"Coffee -- and a lot of it," Brent Feeser (junior-telecommunications) said. "I think the study area is an awesome idea. It's a better environment than my apartment or a dorm."

Kalin said the area was designed with safety in mind.

"The area has its own entrance," she said. "All the other entrances will be locked at midnight. You can get through the main entrance. That way, people feel safe in here."

Some students are less than enthused about the new location.

"I was probably at the Pollock Library at least five times per week," Isaac Shomer (senior-chemistry) said. "I'm trying to use the Pattee Library somewhat, but it's quite inconvenient. I live in Simmons."

Though she said procrastination is not encouraged, Grigor said the area is already in use.

"All-nighters are not a good habit, but we all do it sometimes. Don't we?" she said.

The library area opens Sunday at noon and closes Friday at noon.
