I want to be a teacher. Not a reporter, not a magazine writer or an editor -- to be honest, after graduation I don't know if I'll ever see the inside of another newsroom.
But here I sit in the basement of the James building, spending more time inside a 7- by 8-foot room affectionately nicknamed the 'art box' than I do in my own apartment.
Despite the fact that working here has taught me I don't think I can do it for the rest of my life, I really do love being the Arts Editor.
I spend my days -- and nights -- getting press passes for Jack Hanna, editing stories about Sean Paul and making magazines about State College's awesome nightlife.
If you've been a faithful reader, you'll know that the Collegian's editors have been competing for a chance to tell you about all of the fantastic changes that are going on here at The Daily Collegian.
It's my turn.
Every Thursday the Collegian publishes Venues, the weekly magazine that includes information about the upcoming weekend's entertainment.
Check out 'The Scene,' two pages devoted entirely to local bars and their entertainment lineup.
Trying to find a movie time? We've got that covered too on page 6.
And while the magazine has always served its purpose and done a great job spotlighting the artistic side of State College, I've decided it's time for a face-lift.
Believe it or not, the magazine does serve a purpose other than providing an extra -- if not a more marginally difficult -- crossword puzzle on Thursday mornings.
First of all, each week we'll be including a major feature or profile on a different artist or band. This week will kick it off with a profile about Minor White. And trust me, it's awesome.
Dustin Pangonis spent some time with the band, and it really shows in his feature. Look for it tomorrow. It's a great article.
We'll also be featuring a weekly Q & A session. Turn to the back of each week's issue for a new interview. This week reporter Kevin Doran grills a member of a Philly-based band.
We're also trying to include more quick bits of information. What CDs are being released in the upcoming week? We'll have a list. Who's performing at the Electric Factory in Philly? Read Venues and find out.
Our goal is to make Venues an accessible and fun magazine for our readers. We hope that you recognize and appreciate the changes taking place.
Help us make sure it's what you, the readers, want.
So tomorrow when you pick up your morning paper, don't just discard the magazine that falls out. Take a look.
