Letter to the Editor
Penn State student fans pale next to Notre Dame

This weekend I had the opportunity to attend the Penn State-Notre Dame game, but before the end of Saturday's game I was upset.

I was not upset with our team's sub-par play on the field, nor was I upset with the low morale of the team on and off the field.

Instead, I was upset that we, Penn State students, have had the wool pulled over our eyes.

While we may be one of the best student sections in the country, after attending this weekend's game I can certainly say we are not the single best student section in the country. After experiencing Notre Dame's student section, it will almost be hard to stand in the Penn State student section again. Before you write me off as a Penn State heretic, consider this: the entire Notre Dame student section was present a full 20 minutes before the game and everybody was wearing the same shirt -- not the same color shirt -- the same shirt.

Fifteen minutes before kickoff, the student section, not the alumni, was singing Notre Dame fight songs in anticipation of their team.

The students cheered along with the cheerleaders, as opposed to our cheerleaders who cheer to apathetic onlookers every weekend. The Notre Dame student section even had cheers where the male and female students chanted back and forth to each other.

You may say "well, they have great traditions." Well, so does Penn State - the majority of our students just don't know or care about them.

Believe me, I'm not one of those stuffy old alumni who is upset the students don't sing the alma mater. However, the shirts the Notre Dame fans adorned on Saturday simply said "Tradition." After sitting in their stadium I understand why.
