I would like to comment on the new look of The Daily Collegian, both the online and the print versions. While the layout of the online front page is arguably improved (particularly the use of the Georgia font -- a nice touch that worked well for the New York Times Web site), why doesn't the design scheme cascade down to the other pages on the site?
I presume this will be corrected eventually, but it doesn't look very professional right now.
My main gripe, however, is with the new flag for the print edition. I suppose eliminating the Old Main tower from The Daily Collegian's flag was appropriate for the reasons specified in the opinion column ("Daily Collegian unveils new, yet classic, flag," Sept. 8), but why change the font to such a boring and conventional typeface as Times New Roman?
Surely a university that's on the cutting edge of innovation and technology could have come up with a much more imaginative flag or typeface to represent and channel that innovative spirit.
Perhaps The Daily Collegian should have created a contest to redesign the flag and opened it up to the student body, just like they did for the white-out T-shirt design. Instead, we now have a typeface that's just as stodgy and pedestrian as the suit-wearing administrators who feel the need to act like our parents and ruin the Penn State experience with their new policies that nobody likes.
