Driver in 2-car crash charged with DUI

Natalia Chemodanov, of 465 E. Foster Ave., was charged with driving under the influence Wednesday after she veered into oncoming traffic lanes on the 300 block of First Avenue and crashed her blue Saturn Coupe into a parked green Oldsmobile, according to a State College Police Department accident report.

The Oldsmobile was parked legally in the opposing lane, according to the report. The report also stated that Chemodanov, 21, was driving above the speed limit and attempted to flee the scene before police arrived.

Event to honor National Guard troops

Several roads will be closed and parking will be limited on Saturday night and Sunday because of the Operation Salute event being held at the Bryce Jordan Center to honor members of the Pennsylvania National Guard who have served the nation.

The event will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday to recognize the National Guard's support of the war on terrorism since Sept. 11, 2001, and their response to catastrophes across the nation, including the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts in Louisiana and Mississippi.

According to Penn State's newswire, live.psu.edu, the university expects more than 20,000 National Guard members and their families to be a part of the giant tailgate and other activities.

As part of the ceremonies, military equipment will be on display along Curtin Road, which will be closed beginning noon Saturday to 6 p.m. Sunday, said Clifford Lutz, assistant director of Penn State University police. University Drive between Hastings Road and Park Avenue will be closed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Porter Road is expected to be congested throughout Sunday from 8 to 10 a.m. and also from 5 to 6 p.m., he said.

Parking is prohibited at the Bryce Jordan Center and Beaver Stadium for the weekend because of the event. Visitors can park on campus in any parking deck or in the Orange Lots in Graduate Circle, Lutz said. People planning to attend Penn State soccer games can park in Lot 83 North, the Physical Plant lots or the East Parking deck.
