In 1987, we had the time of our lives watching Patrick Swayze and a girl named Baby move their feet to 80's beats in Dirty Dancing.
Well, I was not one of those people -- I was just a "baby" myself.
But almost 20 years later, my heart pitter-patters at the sight of Swayze and Jennifer Grey dancing the night away. The music, the moves and the classic phrases make the movie an all-time classic.
The magic of Dirty Dancing is something that can't be replicated. So when I heard someone was attempting to make a sequel in 2004, I was curious to see just how terrible it would be.
Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights is set in pre-revolution Cuba in 1958. An American girl and her family move to Cuba, where she begins a romance with a Cuban waiter. The two secretly meet at night and practice their dance moves for a national competition.
The movie lacked the enchantment of the original, as I had predicted. Even a cameo by the hip-swinging Swayze didn't ignite the same pitter-patter effect caused by the original movie.
Yet there is one thing about the film that makes my heart throb with excitement.
The songs on the soundtrack offer a powerful punch. They are filled with
fun, energetic beats that make you
want to dance. Just like that of the
first movie, this soundtrack offers
memorable tracks that can be listened to again and again. Two years later, I still enjoy this absolutely outstanding soundtrack.
Among the various artists on the list are Santana, the Black Eyed Peas and Mya, all offering tons of funky rhythms along the way.
The most familiar of the songs on the soundtrack is probably "Dance Like This" by Wyclef Jean featuring City High's Claudette Ortiz. Shakira's recent hit "Hips Don't Lie" is a reworking of this jam and has a similar melody.
This soundtrack gets my pulse racing and my feet moving. It is an essential ingredient in the recipe for a great dance party. With energetic songs and interesting multicultural beats, there is surely something for everyone on this soundtrack. However, one of my favorites is the slower, more relaxed "You Send Me" by Shawn Kane.
Whether you like salsa dancing, dirty dancing or waltzing, this is a soundtrack to check out. The tunes are irresistible and definitely fun to listen to.
So put on your dancing shoes and have the time of your life all over again.
