Determined to expand his business, Dan Myers said he would pay to bring wireless Internet access to State College and the Penn State campus.

All he needs is Borough Council's approval.

At last night's council meeting, Myers, president and chief executive officer of getwireless.net, was the first wireless Internet provider to speak before the council about the borough's goal to install wireless access to all of State College and campus.

Myers said that his company would be a good provider of the wireless network the borough council hopes to offer because of its experience and credibility as an established business.

"We've already built out a network over the past eight years," Myers said. "We are leaders in the country in doing what we do."

His company's goal is to cover the entire downtown with wireless Internet so that anyone could take their computer around town and purchase access to the wireless network, Myers said.

Getwireless.net, which was founded in 1996 and began installing their WiFi network in May, already offers wireless Internet access to parts of the borough, Myers said.

Although they also offer access to other counties, Myers said State College is their main market.

They also partner with many businesses downtown who promote their service, including Qdoba, 206 W. College Ave., Bar Bleu, 114 S. Garner St., Rotelli, 232 E. Calder Way, HiWay pizza, 340 E. College Ave., and the Deli, 113 Hiester St. Myers said that the network would not take long to build up in State College, and that 20 client adapters could be installed in one day, with each one servicing a 1,000- foot radius of flat terrain.

Council member Ron Filippelli said that a positive aspect of getwireless.net working with the borough on the project is that they are already an established business in the area with many current clients.
