Events help students find niche

Collegian Staff Writer

On a campus of more than 40,000 students, including an incoming freshman class of more than 8,000, finding one's place on campus can be daunting.

Fortunately, Penn State boasts hundreds of opportunities for involvement -- opportunities that will be presented to students this week at the annual Involvement Days program.

Sponsored by the Center for Student Engagement, the program is taking place through Friday in the HUB-Robeson Center's Alumni Hall.

Involvement Days aims to introduce students to the various clubs, organizations and other opportunities both on campus and in the community, said event coordinator Deborah Dworsky, assistant director for University and Student Activities.

Involvement Days Events
Today: Student Organization Fair 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Tomorrow: Volunteer Fair 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Some students new to campus said they recognize the importance of getting involved.

"This school is huge," Kerry Boduch (freshman-kinesiology) said. "Getting involved is important; it's how you make such a big campus seem smaller."

Boduch's roommate, Krista Somers (freshman- engineering), also thinks the program is a good idea.

"We want to get a general idea of what there is to do on campus," Somers said.

Neither knew which clubs they planned to join, they said.

The program includes more than 120 organizations per day participating in the Student Organization Fair, more than 60 service organizations in the Volunteer Fair and greek organizations will be present on Friday.

"This year we have also added Involvement 101 workshops, which are an opportunity for students to sit in on a panel of students discussing their own campus involvement," Dworsky said.

The workshops will be taking place at the same time as Involvement Days events in rooms 129A and B of the HUB.

Also new this year is a disc jockey to liven the mood of the events.

In the past, Involvement Days has received positive feedback and has increased student participation, Dworsky said.

"It is really good in introducing students to opportunities, and student organizations are able to collect at least 20 names per organization," Dworsky said.

New student Fred Ashton (freshman-professional golf management) said participation is key to meeting people, "which is important when there are several thousand kids in your freshman class."

Dworsky said involvement creates a well-rounded educational experience.

"Students gain skills they wouldn't have gained inside the classroom, like how to run a meeting or organize an event," she said.

Yesterday's Student Organization Fair attracted a steady flow of interested students.

"The line of traffic has been consistent," said Dex Tuttle, a graduate assistant in the Center for Student Engagement and a staff member at the event. "Any time you can connect students with groups and involvement opportunities, it's positive."

John Stevenson (freshman-political science) said the fair was helpful and interesting because it featured several clubs.

"You can find everything from political clubs to cultural clubs to fraternities," he said. "And I liked the DJ."

Information on student involvement will be available throughout the year at the Office of Student Engagement in the HUB.
