The band, made up of all sophomores, was created about a year ago and has quickly gained popularity around the area. The group is scheduled to play with Yellowcard and Anberlin at Club Zoo in Pittsburgh's Strip District on Sept. 17.
Cloverleaf drummer, Garrett Bogden, said the band began at Penn State, and the music is a piano rock style that he compares to Ben Folds.
"We wrote our first CD in the dorms," he said.
Cloverleaf also performs in venues around Pittsburgh, and Bogden said he thinks there's a difference between playing in the two areas.
"It's a lot easier to get shows in Pittsburgh, but there's a lot of bands," he said. "It's a lot easier to get a lot of people to come in State College, but harder to find a place to play."
Scheduled to open tonight's show is Ashton Allen, who said tonight is his first time playing in State College.
Allen said his music is derived from many places, and he will accompany another band, Johnny Action Figure, both tonight at the coffeehouse and on a few more tour dates to promote his new album, Dewdrops.
Johnny Action Figure performed at Cloverleaf's last State College show at AfterFest this summer. The band members are currently touring to promote their album Asks The Room To Please Stop Spinning.
Also scheduled to play tonight is Lemonsoul, a State College band with a world-folk feel.
Lemonsoul's members graduated from State College Area High School and have been performing together for 3 1/2 years.
Although the band regularly plays at The Phyrst, 111 1/2 E. Beaver Ave., Sunday nights, lead singer Dan Vidmar said he likes the more relaxed atmosphere at the Abba Java Coffee House.
"It's nice to be able to play a relaxed set every once and a while. At The Phyrst we're always trying to play fast music to get them on their feet."
Allen said he's excited to play in the show with the rest of the performances tonight.
"My focus is on playing good music for music's sake," he said.
