Online ticket lottery set for Penn State-Notre Dame game

In an effort to curtail inflated football ticket resale for the Penn State-Notre Dame game in South Bend, IN., Saturday, student tickets will be distributed entirely through an online lottery, according to a release on the Penn State Athletic department's Web site, www.gopsusports.com.

The lottery, which began at 10 a.m. today via the Web site and will remain open until 5 p.m. tomorrow, allows one entry per each valid Penn State ID number.

Tickets will only be available for pickup outside of Notre Dame stadium on Saturday. No ticket voucher will be honored without the Penn State ID that was used to win the ticket lottery, which, according to the release, will "tame the concern that students who win the right to purchase tickets through the lottery will buy the ticket and quickly resell it at a significantly inflated price with no intention of traveling to the game."

Students who present ID's other than their own when attempting to pick up tickets also will not have their voucher honored.

This is the first time that this method has been used to distribute student tickets. During the 2005 season, tickets for the regular season game in Ann Arbor, MI. were sold on a first-come-first-serve basis, resulting in a long line that began forming hours before tickets went on sale. This system was revised before the Orange Bowl, when tickets were distributed using a wristband system often employed in the distribution of popular concert tickets.

Tickets for both the game at Michigan and the Orange Bowl were often resold for profit by students, which is against state law. The law regarding ticket resale states that it is illegal to resell a ticket for more than $5 above its original ticket price or 25 percent above the original ticket price, whichever is greater.

According to release, students who win tickets for the Penn State-Notre Dame game will be notified by 9 p.m. tomorrow. Each ticket will sell for $59.
