Dramatis Personae: Meet the biggest newsmakers at Penn State University
Fresh Start 2006

Paul Posluszny:

Paul Posluszny

The All-America linebacker, Posluszny typifies a product of Linebacker U. He helped lead Penn State's stalwart defense during last year's 11-1 Big Ten and Orange Bowl championship season. To the joy of Nittany Lions fans everywhere, Puz has returned for his senior season.

No. 31 was last year's Bednarik and Butkus award winner, for the top defensive player and top linebacker in the nation, respectivley. This time around he is on the preseason watch list for the Heisman Trophy, given to college football's best player. If the Lions can repeat last year's success, he could have a good chance to be the first defensive player to win the award since Charles Woodson did in 1997.

Graham Spanier:

Graham Spanier

Spanier was appointed as Penn State's 16th president in 1995. According to his biography on Penn State's web site, www.psu.edu, he hosts a public television and radio show, has run with the bulls in Pamplona, and plays the washboard with local bands.

The university provides Spanier and his family with a house on campus. When he needs to go to a faraway meeting, he's got a university-owned plane waiting for him. Though Spanier is an accomplished magician, he has yet to make tuition disappear.

Gary Cattell
(The Willard Preacher):

Gary Cattell

Often standing at the bottom of the Willard Building steps, the Willard Preacher can be seen yelling at students, telling them they're going to hell for being gay, drinking and having premarital sex.

In college, Cattell experimented with marijuana and cocaine before he found God in 1982. Recognizable by his signature red-hooded sweatshirt, Cattell has been preaching on campus since 1983. He has a wife and children and makes a living off of tithes, donations from community members who support his ministry.

Joe Paterno:

Joe Paterno

One need only take a short walk around campus to get an idea of the legacy Nittany Lions football coach Paterno has already left at Penn State. There's a statue of him outside of Beaver Stadium, the wing of the library completed in 1997 bears his family name and you can always get a bite to eat at the HUB's “Joegies,” a restaurant bearing a caricature of Paterno on all of its packaging.

Last year, Paterno led Penn State to the top of the Big 10 and a victory over Florida State in the Fiesta Bowl.

While some have been calling for the head coach to step down and retirement rumors seem to crop up year after year, Paterno continues to hold the record for most seasons completed as assistant or head coach at any university.

Nick Stathes:

Nick Stathes

Elected president of the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) earlier this year, Stathes will be USG's first leader during the transition period as the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) replaces USG as the officially-recognized student representation group.

Stathes said his campaign goals include increasing student involvement to help lower tuition increases and changing the overall attitude of USG.

Vicky Triponey:

Vicky Triponey

Triponey became Penn State's vice president for student affairs in 2003 after serving as the vice chancellor of student affairs at the University of Connecticut. Her stated mission is to make Penn State a more student-centered university.

Triponey has played an integral role in changing the way the student activity fee is allocated for student programming and events on campus. She has met with some criticism from student group leaders, such as undergraduate student government president Nick Stathes, who say the new infrastructure takes decision-making power out of the hands of students.

Rene Portland:

Rene Portland

Portland has been the coach of the Penn State Lady Lions women's basketball team for more than 25 years. Under Portland's watch, the Lions moved to the Big Ten conference in 1992.

Portland was fined $10,000 earlier this year after the university found her in violation of its nondiscrimination policies. Throughout her years at Penn State, Portland has been accused of creating a hostile environment and discriminating against players who she believed to be gay.

Bill Welch:

Bill Welch

William “Bill” Welch has served as the mayor of State College since 1994. Freshmen often catch their first glimpse of the man at the annual convocation ceremony held during Welcome Week when he dubs them official citizens of Happy Valley.

Welch is the face of State College and has the power to veto ordinances passed by the State College Borough Council.
