DeChellis signs two-year extension

Collegian Staff Writer

Ed DeChellis may have been expecting a laid-back vacation, but it's ending up to be a pretty eventful week for the Penn State men's basketball coach.

Athletic Director Tim Curley announced DeChellis' contract was extended for another two years yesterday while DeChellis was overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in Charleston, S.C. -- two days after he walked his eldest daughter, Casey, down the wedding aisle.

"[My wife] did look at me a little sideways. She said, 'You promised you wouldn't check your e-mail before Wednesday,' " DeChellis said about being unable to resist mixing in work with a summer break. "She's still out there at the beach -- it's beautiful."

According to DeChellis, the extension came as no surprise because Curley suggested contract discussions at the end of March during an annual year-end review. DeChellis said he, Curley and Graham Spanier eventually hammered out the details -- terms were not released due to university policy -- and everything had just been recently finalized.

"We just didn't get all the signatures on it until two weeks ago," he said.

The extension came as great news to Nittany Lion faithful, who were pleased to discover the coach who led Penn State to a NIT berth and arguably the biggest road victory in program history -- a dramatic 66-65 win over then-No. 6 Illinois -- wouldn't have to worry about job security.

Penn State senior Jennifer Owsiany, ESPN.com's Page 2 Miss Bracket, was one of those fans. She briefly resided in "DeChellis-ville" and got in trouble with police for yelling on a megaphone while blasting Zombie Nation in her car -- trying to coax students to attend the home game following the historic Illinois upset last season.

"For me, that's exciting. I love Coach DeChellis," Owsiany said. "He's called me and e-mailed me a couple times, and he's in touch with the students.

"He's done great things, and he's built the team up."

The Lions finished 15-15 last year, the first time the team recorded double-digit wins since the 2000-2001 season. And with Penn State losing only one starter in senior forward Travis Parker, the future looks pretty bright -- especially now that incoming recruits and current players can rest easy.

According to DeChellis, the extension should offer his players a level of comfort because they "want to obviously deal with the people they're talking with" as high school prospects.

"I really don't think about the contract as much or the terms," DeChellis said. "I just want to have a great basketball program for Penn State. I want a Big Ten Championship or an NCAA [Tournament berth] in the worst way."
