Mother allegedly left infant in vehicle

A 26-year-old woman was cited for allegedly leaving her two-month-old infant in her vehicle while shopping at a thrift store at 510 Westerly Parkway yesterday morning.

State College Police Sgt. Mark Argiro said the woman was shopping with her other daughter, a one-year-old, for at least 15 minutes. A police officer reported that the window was cracked open slightly, and he was able to reach through it to unlock the van. The officer said the baby was sleeping and appeared fine.

One officer waited at the van while another checked inside the store for the baby's mother. She will be fined between $50 and $300.

Va. man arraigned following incident

Daniel Cherlow, of Arlington, Va., was arraigned Thursday in front of Centre County District Judge Jonathan Grine on charges of criminal conspiracy, criminal solicitation, burglary, criminal trespass, simple assault and harassment following an incident that occurred at about 3:30 p.m. April 12 at Geary Hall, Penn State University Police said.

According to a criminal complaint, Cherlow solicited his friend Harris Neifield to go to the dorm room of Penn State student Nhan Phan and determine his financial status since Phan allegedly owed him $100 from a poker game.

When Neifield entered Phan's dorm room, police said he told him to sell something in his room to pay the debt.

According to the complaint, Phan responded to Neifield by asking him "Are you done?" Phan told the police Neifield grabbed his neck with both hands, pushed him to the ground and caused him to hit his desk.

He also told police he attempted to leave the room several times, but Neifield would not let him out and punched him in the face. Phan told police he screamed for help and once people came out of their rooms, Neifield fled.

Neifield was charged June 1 with burglary, trespassing, assault and harassment.

PSU students to appear in court for allegedly beating another student

Two Penn State students were sent summons Thursday to appear in front of Centre County District Judge Carmine Prestia on charges for allegedly beating a student in early July outside of Shulze Hall, Penn State University Police said.

Brett S. Toran, of Bala Cynwyd, and Andrew A. Lerner, of Merion Station, were charged with simple assault, disorderly conduct and harassment after they allegedly chased and tackled Justin Katz to the ground at about 2:20 a.m. July 15. Police said they punched him repeatedly.

Two female witnesses told police another man joined the fight and began striking Katz as well. The third suspect has not been identified by police.

Lerner told police July 19 that he had been asked by Toran to assist him in getting Katz out of a woman's room, and that Katz needed assistance walking because he was intoxicated, according to a criminal complaint.

While they were walking, Katz made derogatory remarks toward Lerner and spit in his face, according to a criminal complaint. Lerner said he then punched him, police said. Katz denies that he made derogatory statements, according to the criminal complaint.

Katz was transported to Mount Nittany Medical Center and was treated with six staples for a laceration on his scalp.
