Letter to the Editor
Article has one-sided slant

In the article "Students express support for Israel," August 4, Mary Kanaskie points out the struggle of the Israeli people in their current state of war with Lebanon. "This is an extremely trying time for them," is one direct quote in the article, and "There are a million and a half Israeli citizens in shelters" is another.

Yes, it must be a very trying time for them, but it bothers me that the entire article seems to focus on the poor Israeli civilians when there is another group of people suffering at least as much at the hands of the Israeli government. Why ignore that there have been countless more deaths of Lebanese civilians than Israeli? Why ignore that although the terrorist group Hezbollah is fighting with its limited military power and killing a few Israelis here and there, the Israeli Defense Force is wreaking incredible havoc of its own in Lebanon? The article is a completely one-sided view of an extremely complicated issue that isn't as simple as "yet another of Israel's fights to exist."

When a media outlet fails to reveal both sides of an issue, it's hard to take it seriously without brushing the paper off as simple propaganda. I hope The Daily Collegian also intends to cover activities on campus that are in support of Lebanon.
