Penn State women who still want their MTV can get it when mtvU comes to visit the 40th Annual Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts Thursday and Friday as part of its Girls that Rock Tour.
As part of the tour, mtvU is holding a Girls that Rock VJ Search in which the grand prize winner becomes an mtvU VJ for a day and goes home with a pink Hummer H2 and a $1000 wardrobe.
The wardrobe will be sponsored by Victoria's Secret PINK, which is a line of casual loungewear marketed toward 18-to-22 year old college women.
Jason Rzepka, manager of communications for mtvU, said the network is trying to find a unique personality in the VJ search.
"We're looking for somebody who has a handle on and a passion for new music, someone who has a unique voice, someone who can really capture that college spirit and bring that unique voice to mtvU," Rzepka said.
MtvU is a music network directed towards college students, Rzepka said.
"MtvU is its own entity and we're on 740 college campuses across the United States as well as on our website," Rzepka said. "It's developed for and by college students. We're constantly showcasing the best student-produced work on-air and online."
The contest will be held at mtvU's "PINK lounge" with an interactive trailer and the pink Hummer on display. Potential VJ contestants will have their pictures taken outside the trailer, automatically entering them into the contest.
In addition to the grand prize, there is a first prize of a $500 PINK wardrobe and a second prize of a $250 PINK wardrobe. Also, anyone who stops by the trailer on Thursday or Friday can get a free Girls that Rock CD sampler and a PINK goodie bag.
Included on the compilation are artists Nelly Furtado, India.Arie, Imogen Heap, Tegan and Sara, Psapp and The Dresden Dolls.
"The sampler features a great collection of female artists," Rzepka said. "It's available to anyone who stops by."
The Arts Festival stop is one of seven for the Girls that Rock Tour. In addition to stopping in State College, mtvU will be traveling along the East Coast throughout July to find winners for the contest.
Although the contest is directed towards women, Rzepka said that mtvU will be hosting other events throughout the year directed towards men and to both genders.
"We do about 300 campus events a year," Rzepka said. "This is one particular tour we developed with Victoria's Secret directed towards females. We have a tour later this year called the Game0RZ Ball tour. Students get to play new video games in a bracketed tournament."
In addition to activities for students, mtvU presents its Campus Invasion tour every spring, hosting up-and-coming bands. This year's tour featured Motion City Soundtrack, Straylight Run and Hellogoodbye.
