Describing his work as "goofy," Schmidt said he has been doing it since high school, when he took a photography class. Schmidt said he would print the photographs in his closet and wash them in the kitchen sink.
"As a kid I think I ate too many bananas," he said, adding that he has tried to incorporate other kinds of fruit into his work, but the appeal just wasn't the same.
"[My mom] would say 'Oh no, not more bananas. Why don't you do something pretty?' " Schmidt said.
He said his work doesn't have any deeply hidden meaning, and some of it is just a joke.
"It is kind of like reading the Sunday comics," he said. "You either get it or you don't."
His photographs take anywhere from a couple minutes to several days to prepare for because of his elaborate background sets. But, Schmidt said the best part of the banana series is when he is finished and gets to eat the banana.
Schmidt has been coming to the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts for about 10 years and said he still gets excited for the show.
He plans to spice up Pollock Road with his distinct art Thursday through Sunday, with artwork on display that ranges in price from $40 to $250.
