PSU places in top 25 out of 300 programs
Sports in brief

Penn State celebrated its 13th-straight top 25 finish in the U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup, where points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- including 10 men's and 10 women's.

The standings, a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today, involve more than 300 eligible Division I institutions.

The Nittany Lions finished No. 15 nationally with 727.875 points in the 2005-06 final standings while Stanford won its 12th consecutive title, ending the year with 1,133.375 points.

Four Lion teams brought in spring points, including softball leading the way with 50 after making its sixth NCAA appearance.

In other sports, the women's outdoor track and field team scored 46.5 points; the men's volleyball team earned 35 points after advancing to the national title match, and the men's tennis team brought home 25 points after earning its first NCAA Tournament berth since 1998.
