Letter to the Editor
Debate should encourage students to see exhibit

I want to commend Penn State President Graham Spanier on reinstating Josh Stulman's art exhibit ("Spanier: Student can display art," April 26). While the exhibit should never have been canceled, the reversal is better late than never.

The censorship of creative work must not be allowed at Penn State, regardless of political sensitivities. The last-minute nature of the cancellation and reinstatement demonstrates that the nondiscrimination policy and chain of command need serious revision. I expect nothing less than full apologies and compensation from the university, and I hope that this opens up dialogue on campus regarding freedom of speech issues. If the cancellation were in fact due to sponsorship by Penn State Hillel, a registered organization and active campus contributor, that constitutes nothing less than anti-Semitism and opens up serious questions.

I respect Stulman's courage to speak up on the effects of terrorism, and I hope that more students will see his work in the near future.
