Recent influx of lawsuits shows PSU discriminates
I found it interesting that four of the five articles on the front page of Thursday's Collegian concerned instances of confirmed or alleged discrimination by members of Penn State. Moreover, two of the articles ("Ex-department head sues university" and "Student groups protest choice to keep Portland") were about cases currently in federal court, and both of those cases name important individuals in the Penn State community. Rene Portland, as the head women's basketball coach, is one of the public faces of the university, while Susan Welch, as dean of the College of Liberal Arts, holds a position of power within the administrative hierarchy. The four articles, put together, beg the question: Are these merely isolated incidents, or are they symptoms of institutionalized discrimination at Penn State? David Seltzer
