Group's green efforts worthy of PSU action
A wise man once said, "It is easier said than done." Such is the case with Eco-Action's goals of cutting emissions by 28.4 percent by 2012 ("Spanier replies to Eco-Action letter chain," April 27). Despite the difficulty of the endeavor, it is time for Penn State to step up to the challenge and become a leader in solving our nation's looming energy crisis, and to curb the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming. It is time for Penn State President Graham Spanier to tell the public what Penn State's current efforts are on these issues and to lay out a plan for the future. The efforts of Eco-Action should tell the administration how much today's students care about environmental issues. We want our university to fulfill its historical land grant mission by serving to meet the needs of Pennsylvania residents. Yesterday we needed to improve agriculture; today we need to find renewable energy and reduce greenhouse emissions. The livelihoods of millions of Pennsylvanians are at stake, and Penn State should be leading the effort to find practical and economical solutions to our energy and emission problems. The students have told the administration that these efforts start at home. I hope the university listens. Robert K. Clagg
