I am sad to announce that, after four seasons, the live-action comedy of my life at Penn State will come off the air. There were some great episodes.
Who could forget the long-lost pilot? It was the last Saturday in August 2002. It was hot. It was a noon game: Penn State vs. Central Florida. There was Vladdy and Mountain Dew. I only lasted for about a half of the game before the green, alcoholic contents of my stomach ended up partially on the Beav's bleachers and mostly on Danielle's sweatshirt.
OK, so the pilot was a little rough, but we hit a home run with the second episode.
The excitement on campus was palpable leading up to that Saturday. McKenrick spent the entire week shopping around for the perfect T-shirt to properly instruct Nebraska fans what to do with extraneous husks of corn. From way-too-high-up in section EA, I witnessed the Slaughter of Nebraska. The one and only Larry Johnson found the end zone twice, and this new No. 12 character ran four times for 56 yards and two touchdowns.
The episode where we left before the end of the Iowa game taught us to never leave a game early, but we did get to see Joe Paterno molest referees on national television (something tells me the effect is different live and up-close).
There was the episode at Phi Psi where Danella jammed a cigar into my forearm after I unwisely said, "You won't do it." (Lesson: never dare friends wielding fire, especially if they're Sicilians.)
Flashbulbs lit up the Beav on the episode where LJ surpassed 2,000 yards on a touchdown run against Michigan State right after the sun went down.
There was the 7th floor McKean fire extinguisher incident, and the season finale fifth-of-tequila fiasco. (Lesson: it is impossible to drink 750mL solo).
The second and third seasons were like the football product: irrelevant and forgettable, but the fourth season, just like The Simpsons, will be a must-have DVD for years to come.
The fourth season kicked off with the Chicago episode, where I was one of the only people even asking questions of the Penn State football team. (I did learn that Lloyd Carr prefers to hide behind a Starbucks venti mocha rather than talking to reporters.)
A few games into that season it started to get good. Who could forget the episode where No. 12 knocked out a Minnesota safety? In the Ohio State episode, I got to see Tamba Hali's sack of Troy Smith at field level shortly before nearly getting trampled by the field rushers.
The Ann Arbor episode was rife with loss and heartbreak. There was the excitement of all the Penn State fans at The Brown Jug on Friday night, followed only by disappointment and a huge argument at the hotel the following night.
The Miami episodes will always be a personal favorite. We rented this big-ass minivan and blasted 50 Cent while cruising around paradise. Where else could you witness Deon Butler get lost at sea on a wave runner, or hear Tamba Hali freestyle rap at a beach party, or play beach volleyball with BranDon Snow? We went to football practice wearing board shorts and bikinis, only to be met with a look of extreme jealousy from Jay Paterno. We partied, and lost cell phones, on South Beach. And, of course, the bowl game was the greatest thing I've witnessed live.
Yes, the last few non-football episodes have been a little crazy. Baseball beer pong has taken over most of our weekends. St. Patrick's Day was a mess (according to my cell phone, I was summoned to the line outside the Phyrst at 4 a.m.), and our spoils from the Blue-White game now include a large bamboo pole.
I'm getting ready for the series finale next week, and I'm looking forward to spending it with all of my best friends.
