Letter to the Editor
Many sexual assault figures do not convey real problem

Eric Killian's letter about the misdirected locations of the Take Back the Night chants is uninformed ("Group misdirects majority of Take Back the Night chants," April 25).

It has been cited that only 16 percent of rapes ever get reported, according to the National Victim Center and Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center. That means 84 percent of rape victims go on living in silence without having proper authorities try to go after the rapist(s). The statistics Killian cites for Penn State's crime rate would make it seem like the majority of rapes happening on this campus happen in houses and apartments. Therefore, he argues that the chanters should curb the time they spend spreading awareness in front of fraternities. But the sad reality is that probably the statistics mean more of the rapes happening in houses and apartments get reported, while most of the rapes that happen in fraternities and dorms go unreported.

The fact is that we will never truly know what percentage of rapes happen where because there are many reasons why women fear reporting it. As long as our society continues to endorse misguided opinions about rape, victims will not feel comfortable reporting a crime committed against them.
