A Penn State student failed to stop at a flashing red light early yesterday morning, causing his sport utility vehicle to be struck by another vehicle, become airborne and land on a police cruiser.
At about 12:30 a.m. yesterday, Kevin Bullwinkel, 20, of East Meadow, N.Y., was driving his Ford Explorer on Westerly Parkway, heading east toward South Atherton Street, according to a State College Police Department report. The report states that Bullwinkel proceeded through the intersection despite the flashing red light.
A Toyota Camry driven by another Penn State student, Thomas Corrado, 21, of Hatfield, struck his vehicle on its right side, sending Bullwinkel's vehicle flying through the air into the front end of a police cruiser, which skidded back about 5 feet, according to the report.
Bullwinkel was thrown from his vehicle, which landed driver's-side-down in the grass off the roadway, according to the report.
As Bullwinkel lay in the grass next to his car, State College police officer William Small, whose squad car was hit, called for an ambulance and additional police, according to the report. Bullwinkel had no visible injuries, and, after several minutes, he was able to stand up.
According to the report, Bullwinkel appeared disoriented. The report states he could not remember where he was coming from or what his destination was, and that he asked the officer numerous times what day it was.
Bullwinkel and Corrado were both taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center. A hospital spokeswoman said yesterday that Corrado was treated and released, but there was no record of Bullwinkel having been treated.
Bullwinkel has been charged with disobeying traffic signals. Police said alcohol and drugs were not a factor in this accident.
