Moving company helps students pack up

Collegian Staff Writer

To alleviate students' stress surrounding finals and the responsibility of packing up and vacating their dorms, one Philadelphia-based company says, "Moving Sucks, Let us Help."

BoxMyDorm.com, a company founded only months ago, is offering its packing and storing services to Penn State students who are moving away for the summer and want their belongings stored conveniently in State College.

Dan Abrahamsen, the president of Penn Storage, who owns and runs BoxMyDorm.com, said the idea to have a company that provides boxes and storage for college students originated at the University of Pennsylvania with Collegeboxes.com.

"We figured we could do it cheaper," Abrahamsen said.

Because Penn State provides storage space only for international students, all other students, including those from out of state, must move out of university property by 4 p.m. May 6 and either take their things home with them or pay to have them stored nearby.

Abrahamsen and his partners built a Web site to draw in hassled student customers. On BoxMyDorm.com, students simply have to fill out a form with their names, e-mail addresses, permanent addresses, phone numbers and current residences.

Abrahamsen said that after students choose how many and what kind of boxes they want, the company will drop off their orders so the students can pack their things.

Finally, students schedule the time movers can pick up their boxes and take them to storage, he said.

The standard box, which measures 24 inches by 18 inches by 18 inches and holds up to 70 pounds, costs $29 to have delivered, picked up, stored for the summer and returned to the student's new residence in the fall.

If a student requires more than just a cardboard box, BoxMyDorm.com also offers the option of plastic storage bins for $50 a piece or suitcases for $45 each, Abrahamsen said.

Kyle Thomas (freshman-international politics), who lives in Tener Hall, is using the services offered by BoxMyDorm.com.

"It was a lot easier because I'm from the West Coast -- Portland, Oregon -- and I would rather store my things here than haul everything home," he said.

The pricing seemed reasonable compared to the alternatives of hauling his stuff home or paying for storage units in State College, Thomas added.

Students can also store their furniture and appliances, according to the company's Web site, including small refrigerators, file cabinets, trunks, TVs, chairs, beds, futons, desks and bikes. They are offering coupons for free packing tape to make the packing process even easier.

The order deadline for Penn State students is tomorrow.
